In June, some of our colleagues swapped their desks for a sighted guide training session courtesy of the team at Guide Dogs. During the session, attendees tried on vision-simulation glasses, got stuck into blindfolded pose challenges and guided walks through the office – all designed to show what it’s like navigating a sighted world without full sight.
Colleagues left the session more confident about supporting people with visual impairments and with a much better grasp of the everyday challenges involved. Even Dan, one of our own visually impaired colleagues, picked up something new, admitting there were a few sighted guide techniques he hadn’t come across before (even jokingly grading his colleagues’ guiding skills prior to the session!).
Amanda, Head of HD Operations and Advisory, reflected on the training: “It’s not theory… it’s about how we can make people’s experience at work a more comfortable one.”
