In our student hub this month we catch up with our colleague Ross. Ross has worked with us since May 2013 as a part time Claims Advisor.
Most of my friends worked in fast food stores or pubs but I wanted to get some experience in a professional office environment. Hastings Direct visited my school (Bexhill Academy) which sparked my interest to apply. I was successful in my application and joined as a part-time Claims Advisor. I spent three years in college studying Maths, Business, Accounting and ICT and I’m now in my second year at the University of Brighton studying Mathematics.
My part time hours work really well with my university schedule. Hastings Direct has been incredibly flexible and supportive over the five years I’ve worked with the company while studying. By working evening and weekends, I manage to balance my work, study and social life easily and this is largely down to the support offered at Hastings Direct. The company really cares about my development both academically and personally.
I’ve gained many skills from working in the Claims department; I’m able to work under pressure and I’ve learnt to manage my time and resources. I have strengthened my communication skills through my role which helps with my university work. Communicating mathematics to non-mathematicians is vital for my degree and personal projects.
The working environment at Hastings Direct is great - you can walk into any department and everybody is so warm and welcoming. It’s easy to feel part and be part of the Hastings Direct community from day one.

The shifts in customer service teams are quite colleague friendly. There is free tea and coffee in the call centre, and a subsidised Costa Coffee and canteen. There are lots of incentives to earn more, and a decent social life.
It has a really positive environment with everyone who works there being very helpful. The managers really do go out of their way to assist you. There are a lot of benefits and rewards at Hastings Direct which if you are doing well are quite easy to achieve.
